We are a 100% volunteer-based, no kill, 501(c)(3), foster-based rescue

Thanks for your interest in adopting a rescue dog from Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis!

So that this is a positive experience for everyone in your household, it is important that the new responsibilities and time commitment have been discussed and agreed to by everyone residing in your home and that all members of your family are excited about welcoming a new family member.

There are two types of Adoptions:

Standard Adoption - This adoption covers the majority of our rescue dogs.  This adoption applies if the dog you are interested in has been completely vetted and it has been determined by Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis' adoption team the dog is "forever home" ready.  For this adoption, the adoptive family needs to complete, the Adoption Application (below) and review the terms & conditions of the Adoption Contract.  The Adoption Contract will be signed by the adoptive family and a volunteer from Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis at the time of adoption.  Click here to review adoption terms & conditions and complete our Adoption Application located at the end of this page.

Foster To Adopt - This is the adoption process necessary if the dog you are interested in has not yet completed the vetting process and requires some additional time before his/her treatments are finished.  This type of adoption allows the adoptive family the ability to bring the dog they have chosen into their home and love and care for them until they have had all their remaining veterinary care.  For example, this would apply to puppies, dogs that are being treated for heartworms, dogs with post-surgical wounds, etc.  For this adoption, the adoptive family needs to complete the Foster Home Application (below) and review the terms & conditions of the Foster To Adopt Agreement.  The Foster To Adopt Agreement will be be signed when the dog is delivered to the adoptive family and the Adoption Contract is signed once the vetting is complete.

After submitting your Application, you will receive an email confirming your submission.   Your Application will be forwarded to one of our Adoption Coordinators for review.

It is our goal to contact you within 24 hours; however, since all the folks that support our rescue are volunteers, it could take up to 48 hours before you receive a phone call or email.   We look forward to speaking with you.

Due to the volume of applications we receive, it is not possible for us to contact you if you are NOT selected to proceed to the next step in the Adoption process.  We appreciate your understanding.

Before completing a Foster Home or Adoption Application, please review the following policies/guidelines:

Adopters must be at least 21 years old and present valid photo ID with proof of current address.

All of our dogs require a completely and adequately fenced yard.

All electronic/invisible fencing needs to be professionally installed.

For adopters that live in an apartment or condo where fencing is not possible, Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis reserves the right to determine if adequate exercise is available for our rescue dog by leash walking.

All household members are required to meet the new dog prior to adoption.
If you are adopting a second dog into your household and have other family pets, they must all meet prior to the adoption and have a positive introductory experience.  In addition, all other pets in the household must be spay/neutered.

If renting, written landlord approval is required.

We DO adopt to households with small children (five years and older).  However, we DO NOT adopt puppies to households with children under the age of six.  We reserve the right to make adjustments to this policy on a case-by-case basis.

Veterinary Care

We require a copy of veterinary records be emailed or faxed to our Intake Volunteer to ensure our rescue dog will be placed in a home that provides the best possible care.  If you currently do not have a dog but have had one in the past, the previous dog’s records are acceptable.  If this is your first pet, this does not apply.

Additionally, if you adopt a dog from RFSTL that is 6 months or older (at time of adoption) and the dog is diagnosed with heartworms at their annual check up, and you purchased monthly heartworm medications from anyone other than your vet, RFSTL is not responsible for reimbursement of any expenses related to heartworm treatment. Adopton Donations

  •          $395 for puppies 8 weeks to 1 year
  •           $325 for dogs 1 year to 7 years

  •           $175 for senior dogs

These donations help offset costs associated with veterinary care, training and many of the other day-to-day expenses incurred in finding forever homes for our rescues.

Adoption Terms & Conditions

Carefully review our Adoption Contract and the Foster To Adopt Agreement.

Once the home visit has been completed and your household has been approved, you are ready to give one of our amazing rescue dogs a forever home.

While we always make every effort to work with you to address concerns or find the most appropriate companion animal, we do reserve the right to refuse an adoption.
