|Always In Our Hearts|
In late 2013, a small group of very experienced rescue volunteers joined forces and began a journey that led to the creation of Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis. These volunteers have been finding forever homes for rescue dogs across the country for many years.
It was important to the volunteers that the organization be 100% volunteer-based and that every cent of every dollar collected go directly to the care and placement of the rescued dogs.
Another aspect of the Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis approach to rescue is our placement of rescued dogs in foster homes while they await their “forever” family. Caring for the dogs in a home environment, instead of a shelter, allows foster families to more accurately define the dog’s personality traits, likes and dislikes. This is invaluable information for the family who will welcome a rescue dog into their home. It also makes the transition to their “forever” home much less stressful.
Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis is a new rescue organization, yet the story of the rescue dogs we’ve encountered is all too familiar. Our decision to concentrate on Retrievers is based on the fact that Retrievers are popular dogs who are often over-bred to meet demand via puppy mills, backyard breeders and others who are more interested in making money than caring for these beautiful, loyal and gentle dogs. As a result, shelters intake more dogs than they can handle and dogs that are in homes where they are determined to be a bad fit face abuse, neglect and abandonment. Although we focus on Retrievers, our volunteers are committed to placing every homeless dog, regardless of breed. These dogs represent the “Friends” in the name of the organization.
Our volunteers will go to the ends of the earth for Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis; doing everything we can to ensure each dog lives a happy and healthy life! We consider ourselves fortunate that our volunteers have the opportunity to rescue these dogs, whether the outcome takes them on a journey to a better life, or sadly, when that journey is over the Rainbow Bridge.
Retrievers & Friends of St. Louis' volunteers believe the joy of rescue can’t be known until you look into the eyes of these beautiful dogs and experience their tremendous gratitude first-hand.
Passion is what drives our volunteers, and it is that passion which energizes us in our mission to save one dog at a time, one day at a time.
